Violet June Simmons Jernigan, 86, of Alexandria, Virginia passed away on June 10, 2020.

She was born in Pulaski, Virginia on September 5, 1933, the daughter of Troy and Nellie Simmons.

June was a devout Christian.  In fact, it was in church where she met the love of her life, Sheldon Jernigan.  They were married by her father, who was an ordained minister, on October 28, 1950.  She was always so proud that her father married them.  June and Sheldon raised two daughters.

During her better days, June loved to read, garden, and take care of her home and pool.  She loved the sunshine and being outside to watch the birds and butterflies.  She loved to provide food for everyone, including her furry and feathered friends.  She had the biggest sweet tooth you can imagine and loved to share her sweets.  Most of all, June loved her family, dearly, and would do anything for them.  She was a gentle soul, with a heart of gold.

June is survived by her husband of nearly 70 years, Sheldon Jernigan; daughter, Teresa Brooks (William); daughter, Tamara Comiskey; grandsons William Brooks and Andrew Brooks; brothers, Larry (Becky), Kenneth; and sister, Jill (Art).  She was preceded in death by her parents Troy and Nellie Simmons; brother Ted; sisters, Judy and Lucille.

Due to the current pandemic, a small private burial will take place at Ft. Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood, Maryland.  A celebration of life will occur at a later date, when it is safe to do so.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America at www.alzfdn.org.

  1. For many years June was an integral part of the women’s ministry of our church in Washington D.C.  She and Sheldon were also our neighbors in Upper Marlboro for several years.  June was a sweet soul, always eager to participate in whatever was going on.  When we’d have church dinners or other celebrations, I could always call on June to bake a cake.  Today she rests in peace with God.  Much love to the family from Pastor John and Vivian Warren (retired).
