Peggy L. (Kuniewicz) Hoffend

October 3, 1947 ~ April 30, 2020 (age 72)

Obituary

Peggy L. Hoffend (Kuniewicz), 72, passed away on Thursday April 30, 2020, at her home in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, surrounded by her loving family.

Peggy was born on October 3, 1947 to Charles J. and Lorraine S. Kuniewicz in Brooklyn, NY. She and her family moved to Buffalo, NY, where she finished school. Peggy loved to travel and became a flight attendant with American Airlines, and later a model appearing in a number of local and national print and TV advertisements. As a flight attendant, she was based out of New York City, Dallas, Buffalo, and finally Washington, DC. She married Don Hoffend on May 27, 1978, and subsequently moved to Pittsford, NY. After 16 years as a flight attendant, Peggy devoted her life to raising their two children. She was a dedicated fan of all of her children’s and grandchildren’s sports and activities.

Peggy loved to dance, socialize, read, go to the theater, and travel with her family. Peggy was a fierce advocate for updating fire safety protocols at local schools and organizations, bringing a wealth of safety knowledge from her experience as a flight attendant. She was also involved in local and national politics. Peggy was a skilled knitter, making baby blankets for family and friends, as well as blankets and hats for premature babies at local hospitals. For the past eight years, Peggy actively participated in the local Kiwi chapter (American Airlines Retired Flight Attendants), the Commonwealth Republican Women’s Club, and a Tuesday Night Knitters club, meeting new friends and reuniting with old coworkers.

Peggy’s love, passion, and care will be terribly missed by those lucky enough to know her. In the spring of 2018, she was diagnosed with stage IV Leiomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer. True to her strong-willed spirit, Peggy tenaciously battled the cancer for two years.  By outliving her initial prognosis, she was able to meet her newest grandchild and give us all extra time with her. While grieving her loss, her family rejoices at Peggy’s reunion with her parents and other beloved family and friends.

Peggy is survived by her devoted husband Donald Aloysius Hoffend, Jr.; her children and their spouses Donald (Trip) Hoffend, III and his wife Josephine (Josi) of Winston-Salem, NC; Carly Gasior (Hoffend) and her husband Jon of Annapolis, MD; and her grandchildren Hailey, Donald (Cade) IV, Marcus, Emmett, and Luke; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service and celebration of life for Peggy will be held at a date in the future, when it is safe to do so. Please send your email address to PeggyHmemorial@gmail.com so that we can update you once a date has been selected.
