Howard McCord Zimmerman, Jr., 87, died on January 2, 2021 in Alexandria, VA after a short illness.  He was born in Baltimore, Maryland on January 26, 1933 to Emma Catherine Stichel Zimmerman & Howard McCord Zimmerman, Sr.  Howard married Marion Nancy Zimmerman in 1969, which this May would have been 52 years.

Howard McCord Zimmerman, Jr., 87, died on January 2, 2021 in Alexandria, VA after a short illness.  He was born in Baltimore, Maryland on January 26, 1933 to Emma Catherine Stichel Zimmerman & Howard McCord Zimmerman, Sr.  Howard married Marion Nancy Zimmerman in 1969, which this May would have been 52 years.

After graduating from Towson High School at the age of 16, Howard served in the US Coast Guard as a radar operator from 1949 – 1952.  He then attended and graduated from college in 1959, earning degrees in History and Economics at The Kings College in New York City. Subsequently, he graduated from American University in 1963 with a Master’s Degree in Foreign Affairs.

In 1960, he started a successful career within the US Government serving in the Middle East with Foreign Affairs.  Then returned to the United States working with the U.S Public Health Service, Supreme Court & The White House. During his time with the Public Health Service, in 1982, Howard was recognized for outstanding contributions to the PHS Information Collection Budget project. After retirement, Howard Zimmerman served as the President of the American Society for Psychical Research.

Howard was a spiritual man, attending The Church of the Saviour in Washington, DC, St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church in Alexandria, VA, and Mount Vernon Unitarian Church in Alexandria, VA.  He had an interest in classical and gospel music, and enjoyed reading.  For many years, Howard enjoyed trips to Graves Mountain Lodge with his wife and daughters, and later his daughter Carolyn’s family.

In addition to his wife, Howard is survived by his daughters Carolyn White and Karrah (Kerry) Marlin, grandchildren Kyle White and Samantha White, his niece Susan Schmidt-Wiebe, grandniece Maggie Wiebe, grandnephews Luke Wiebe and Johnathan Schmidt.  Along with many extended family members. Howard was preceded by his sisters, Iris Zimmerman, Eunice Schmidt and his nephew Steven Schmidt.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made in Howard’s name to St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church or Mount Vernon Unitarian Church.  An in person memorial service will be held at a later date.
