Obituary

Carol Lisi of Alexandria, Virginia, died peacefully in her home on December 8th, 2021. Born in Roanoke, Virginia to Aubrey and Corinne, and sister to the late Margaret Kurtin, Carol is survived by her husband of 57 years, Dale, her children, Margaret(Subroto), Dale(Stephanie), Catherine(Maurizio), four loving grandchildren, and many caring nieces and nephews.

Carol has dedicated her life to teaching and educating.  She moved to Alexandria in the 1960s and began her career as an English teacher at Thomas Edison High School in Franconia, VA.  After taking time off to raise her family, she returned to work as a teacher of English as a Second Language (ESL) and later rose to the position of Director of ESL for Alexandria City Public Schools.  She received a Bachelor of Arts from the College of William and Mary, Master of Arts from Indiana University, and Ph.D. in Education from The Catholic University of America.

Carol was a passionate advocate for the rights of the limited English proficient student, and worked tirelessly in support of her students and their families, both in her professional capacity and in her personal life.  During her career, she helped develop curriculum to be used in the classroom as well as implemented programs to strengthen ties between the school system and the ESL community. She served on the boards of Residential Youth Services,Inc., Bienvenidos, Inc., and United Community Ministries, Inc.  After her retirement, she continued to work; as a teacher of English to homebound students and as a consultant to the Harcourt Company and the Educational Testing Service.

Fostering a sense of community was very important to Carol. She loved having her family around her. She was an active member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church and a member of the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites, and devoted much of her time and energy in service to these organizations. Carol enjoyed gardening, painting, cooking, and traveling, especially driving through the Appalachian mountains in autumn.

Carol was grateful for the friends in her life and found inspiration and encouragement from their generosity and support. She will be remembered with love by her family and friends.
